Ever wondered how humble Google finance used to look to in the year 2000? Well here it is.

classic.google.finance.2000

Page still exists on Google’s server if you would like to have a look.

As you can see back then it used to link to Excite Money and Investing instead of Yahoo. Who would have thought back then that this huble toddler would grow up to be handsome teenager in Beta!.

Google launches Google Finance. what can you exect in near future?

As anticipated from long time Google has finally launched Google finance.

You can exepct a full run down of google finance on this blog later today. For now here are some of the features:-

Company Search — With Google Finance you can search for stocks, mutual funds, public and private companies, using both company names and (where available) ticker symbols.

Interactive Charts — Google Finance charts correlate market data with corresponding dated news stories to help you determine if there is a relationship between them (for instance, by seeing news stories that came out about a certain company in the context of what that company’s stock did that day). You can also click and drag the charts to see different time periods and zoom in to see more detailed information.

News and More News — Google Finance incorporates our Google News service, which gathers stories from more than 4,500 English news sources worldwide. Stories are clustered by topic so you can see different opinions on a single subject; you can also review news stories by monthly date range and by importance (which is determined by algorithms).

Blogs — If you want the opinions of citizen journalists, you got ‘em; Google Finance includes company-related postings from Google Blog Search.

Company Management Team — Google Finance helps you put a face to a name. Mousing over an executive name shows you their picture as well as links, where available, to their biography, compensation details and trading activity.

Discussion Groups — Talk amongst yourselves. Google Finance offers high-quality Discussion Groups whose dedicated team of moderators work to keep conversations on and spam-free. (They are eyeing fool.com here it seems)

Portfolios — Google Finance offers a fast, easy and powerful way to keep create and maintain your portfolio of stocks and mutual funds.

This would stiff competetion to competing sites like yahoo and msn. In all fairness they still link to Yahoo, Msn, MarkeWatch, CNN and Reuters when you search for a ticker symbol in google. (Imagine MSN and Yahoo linking to others after having launched their own service).

Finance information was one are where there were plenty of options already. Google as lacking in organising the finance information. They have filled this gap now. They have been offering real-time and delayed stock prices and portfolio features for quite sometime on search and google home page and Google desktop search.

What more we can expect in coming days..

  • Portfolio alerts
  • Portfolio RSS feeds
  • Share your portfolio with others
  • Google home page module with selective details from google finance
  • Country specific version of google finance (atleast major financial markets)
  • Mobile version of Google finance
  • Google Finance API
  • Adwords on Google Finance…

A first time poster at the Google Earth Community posted a placemark to this incredible sight of a fully restored Lancaster Bomber which just happened to be flying just about over his house (which is why he found it)

French Google Parody

We all know how much french love google. Taking this a step further someone has created Gogol.

Gogol takes your search term and takes you to a random website, completely disregarding what you typed. I guess this is french’s revenge for google’s relevant results. :)

Translated version of about Gogal page.

Site can be accessed here http://gogol.librelogiciel.com/

  • All the channels are listed on left.
  • Yahoo Answers gets limelight just below the search box.
  • There are only 2 adverts on the entire home page… which is so not yahoo!!

Google : Judge tells DoJ “No” on search queries only URL’s

Google blog writes:

“…This is a clear victory for our users and for our company, and Judge Ware’s decision regarding search queries is especially important. While privacy was not the most significant legal issue in this case (because the government wasn’t asking for personally identifiable information), privacy was perhaps the most significant to our users. As we noted in our briefing to the court, we believe that if the government was permitted to require Google to hand over search queries, that could have undermined confidence that our users have in our ability to keep their information private. Because we resisted the subpoena, the Department of Justice will not receive any search queries and only a small fraction of the URLs it originally requested…”
